“The masu has been used as a measuring tool for various items since around 1300 years ago. Because it was used to measure rice, which had the same value as money, people imbued the masu with various meanings, hoping for a bountiful harvest of the five grains. Additionally, it was used as a container for offerings to the gods, further cementing its reputation as a sacred and auspicious tool. We would speculate that this masu dates back to the early Meiji period.”
